Signed-Communication

Children with autism have difficulty communicating. This is not to say that they aren't communicating at all, even completely non-verbal children with autism communicate. The problem is they may not be communicating in a way that is clear to those around them, or they may be communicating in a way that is undesirable. For example, a child who throws himself on the floor in a tantrum because he wants a toy that is out-of-reach is communicating. He may kick, scream, cry, and injur himself. If he could speak he would be saying "I want that toy!" He is communicating, but the person he is communicating with may have absolutely no idea what it is that he is upset about. Wouldn't it make life a lot easier for everyone if this same child could simply sign "I want a toy."?
